FACTS
Welcome to our Fun
Facts Page! Each month we will post new information, facts, grooming and
training tips about the "Little Lion" the Shih Tzu! The
biggest question we get from clients is "How do you potty train and does
it take very long?" Here are a few things that I have found
to help things go in the right direction:
-
Be consistent
about when you feed and water and how soon you take them out.
Timing is very important!
-
About 15 minutes
after your puppy eats and plays take them outside. If he has
an accident before 15 minutes shorten the time in 5 minute intervals
until you figure out what schedule your puppy needs.
-
After he wakes
from a nap, take immediately outside.
-
Patience, only
scold when you catch them in the act (please use your voice only and
body language. To hit the puppy or rub their nose in it only
makes them more scared of you and still not sure what they did
wrong) Take your puppy for a walk afterwards and really praise
and reward him when he does his jobs outside.
-
Give a verbal
phrase (& treat if you wish) when he eliminates outside. Soon
they will catch on when you say the same phrase, they will go potty
on cue. Remember to give lots of praise afterwards. Keep
it fun!!
-
To paper or puppy
pad train, line the floor of the room where the puppy is to stay
until he eliminates. Replace the soiled ones with clean ones.
After a few days take some of the paper or pads out so some of the
floor is exposed. Over a period of time, remove more of
the paper or pads until all that is left is one small area with a
pad or newspaper. If you catch him eliminating on the floor
correct him gently and put him back on the paper and give praise.
As he grows and learns to hold it longer you can begin to take him
outside several times a day and give a lot of praise when he does
his job.
